How to save money on groceries without using coupons

7 Mar

One of my failed attempts at saving money on groceries-homemade popsicles. They fell right off of the mold! 🙂

Although I do believe clipping coupons can be a money-saving technique there are other ways which might prove easier and simpler than clipping coupons.  The following are some tried and true ways that we are continually trimming our grocery budget as food prices continue to increase.

  1. Menu Plan!  It is amazing how little food you can get by on if you are eating all of it and none of it is getting wasted.  This one technique has helped us save tons of money and waste less.  I also plan meals into our menu where we turn leftovers into something else.  For more info click here.
  2. Eat simple inexpensive meals.  Not only are fancy dinners more expensive, they also take a lot more time.  We have the occasional fancy meal but for the most part stick with healthy simple meals.  This allows more time for things that really matter like spending time with one another.
  3. Aldi: If you have an Aldi store within 30 miles of your house you should be shopping there.  Aldi’s prices are rarely beat even with coupons.  We don’t buy everything there but most of our staples, fresh fruits and vegetables come from there.  They also always have the cheapest milk around.  A good half of our food budget is spent at Aldi.  I try to shop there twice a month and keep a running list on the fridge.  🙂
  4. Shop only a few times a month: I will be the first to tell you that the more trips to the grocery store I make the more money we spend on food.  Make a good menu plan, write out a detailed list, and shop for those items only.  We shop for groceries 3-4 times a month only.  I also keep track of how much I am spending as I go throughout the store.  If I am going to go over budget something goes back before the checkout.  (We also shop only with cash.)
  5. Cook and when you do cook from Scratch: Not only is this one of the best ways to lower your grocery bill but it is much healthier.  If you don’t already know how to cook now is the time to learn.  🙂  I also like to make double servings and freeze the extras for later.
  6. Build a Pantry: I find it very helpful to have a well stocked pantry.  A good selection of spices (purchased on sale of course) is a must when cooking often for your family.  It is also helpful to have a variety of other goods in your cupboard.  If you run out of something it is easier to find a substitution in your cupboard than to run to the store.
  7. Garden: buy growing just a few select vegetables and herbs you can significantly decrease your grocery budget.  I have not yet ventured out into this area since getting married but hope to have a tiny garden this year.  🙂

Fewer trips to the store also saves gas money, which is likely to be a big savings point this summer as gas prices (hopefully not, but probably) breech the $4 mark. I am going to start shopping with my bike, though, so I may be going once or twice a week. 😦 We’ll see if the gas I save is more or less than the money I lose by shopping more often!
